“Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let Him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let Him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.” (Matthew 27:22-25 KJV)
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Oh! precious is the flow,
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Now by this I’ll overcome,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Now by this I’ll reach my home,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Glory! Glory! This I sing,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
All my praise for this I bring,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

In reading the above passage, two versus stuck out the most to me, the first being at the end of verse 22 that says: “Let Him be crucified.” That in itself does not stand out unless you take into account who was saying it. It was the Jews that said: “Let Him…” As you are quite aware, Jesus had already planned for this, it was His sacrifice and Jesus said His farewells at the Last Supper. It was as if there were angels in the crowd of people proclaim, “Let Him” do what He came to do, “Let Him.”
I would not be giving this thought justice if I did not include:
“And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered , Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.” (John 19:9-11 KJV)
Basically for those that do not understand, Jesus speaking to Pilate said: “You could have no power at all against me, except it was give you from above.” Here Jesus is saying in a round about way, I came here for this purpose of my own free will, stand aside and allow me to get this over with.” Jesus came to be the ultimate sacrifice as the only one that was worthy enough to take on all the sins of the world and nail them to the cross taking them to the grave to hand deliver all the sins of the world to hell personally.
Then in verse 25, I can imagine how Jesus had that little smirk on His face when those same Chief Priests and Jews said: “His blood be on us, and on our children.” Without knowing it, being totally oblivious to who was in control the whole time, the Jews proclaimed with a LOUD VOICE in ONE ACCORD:
“What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Oh! precious is the flow,
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
